BULLARD —
Students, from left, Jazmen Jones and Morgan Fore of The Brook Hill School provide a little elbow grease Thursday as they volunteer to help build Bullard Kid's Park, a fantasy play land dreamed up by local children and created by residents during a five-day construction marathon that culminates Sunday with a 4 p.m. dedication.
The $315,000 project, designed by Leathers and Associates, is the brainchild of the local Rotary Club, which suggested using volunteers to keep cost down.
Although wet, icy weather dominated the first part of the week, by Wednesday morning, volunteers gathered at the site, located north of the city's downtown on Rather Street, were quickly greeted by sunny, blue skies, said volunteer coordinator Ashlee Jones.
The first day “went fantastic,” she said. “It was very organized, very smooth, and we had close to 200 volunteers show up. And the weather was beautiful.”
Volunteers are being encouraged to lend a hand, she added, “Anybody who wants to be part of the project, of the community, we're not going to say no to them.”
Jones said she has been “pleasantly surprised” at how plans have fallen into place since the project was first conceived. “It's such a great thing to watch, seeing the camaraderie out here among our volunteers,” she said.
