Cherokee County Sheriff's department selects employees of the year

RUSK — A former city firefighter noted for his work ethic has been selected as one of Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell's 2012 Employees Of The Year.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Deputy Brent Eugene Dickson, 26, of Jacksonville, was singled out for the honor by his peers in the department – who made their selection by formal vote.

According to news reports, Brent Dickson also has dealt with high pressure situations as a deputy – including an incident involving a Troup woman who died in August after jumping out of the back of a moving ambulance.

The deputy is the son of Jimmy Dickson, a former Cherokee County Sheriff and a current special Texas Ranger for the Texas and Southern Cattle Raisers Association.

Neither Sheriff Campbell nor Brent Dickson could immediately be reached to comment on the accolade Thursday afternoon.

Brent Dickson worked as a paid firefighter for about two years before leaving the Jacksonville Fire Department, said Jacksonville Fire Capt. Kevin McKinney, who has known the deputy nearly all of his life as his son is the same age.

"He would make a great asset for any department," McKinney said. "He was a very good employee and a really likable guy. He was very eager, always on time and always ready for work."

After his time with the fire department, Brent Dickson went on to Ranch Management school, then returned and joined the sheriff's department, McKinney said.

Campbell made the recent Cherokee County Sheriff's Department 2012 employees of the year announcement by news release.

The 2012 Employee of the year Award also has a category for jailers, and 2012's honor went to Cherokee County Correctional Officer Todd Andrew Driver, 33, of Rusk.
