JISD Board approves new schools' design

JACKSONVILLE — Jeff Edwards of Claycomb Associates Architects gave the Jacksonville Independent School District Board of Trustees a sneak peek at what the new East Side and Joe Wright elementaries will look like once they are complete in 2012.

Edwards presented the trustees renderings of portions of each new school with color schemes, furnishings, natural lighting and other details in place.

“We are meeting with the high school group and the group at Fred Douglass (Elementary),” said JISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Wardell, explaining that plans are underway for the renovations to both of those campuses, but because the new elementary projects are so labor and time consuming, Board approval was needed as soon as possible. “Plans are going well on those other two aspects (JHS and Fred Douglass) as well.”

Trustees voted unanimously to approve the design development phase of planning for the new campuses.

Edwards explained to the board that the designs presented Monday night were the second of three phases in the process of planning the new campuses. Trustees approved the initial schematic phase Jan. 4. The final phase will be the construction document phase, which trustees will likely be presented at the April meeting, Edwards said.

Both new campuses will feature brick veneer masonry on the exterior, with stucco and aluminum windows.

Acoustical panels in shades of gold, deep blue, and deep red will be attached to the walls and hung from the ceilings, banner style, to help add color and reduce sound, Edwards said.

Interior walls will have a ceramic tile wainscoting with either painted surfaces or brick masonry above.

And both campuses will feature numerous windows in the hallways, gyms and other areas in the schools “to try to feed a lot of natural lighting into the space,” Edwards said.

Both campuses will be similar in the layout of the office, gym and cafeteria spaces, but the new Joe Wright campus, at the corner of Hwy. 175 and Pineda Street, will be a two-level design with the media center at the center of the school. Because of the slope of the lot on which the school will be built, the campus will feature four hallways of classrooms at the rear of the school stacked two classrooms high.

East Side's student capacity will remain at its current level — approximately 750 students — but Joe Wright's capacity will expand from its current 500 students to 700-750 students, Wardell said. With the expansion at Joe Wright and additional space allowing more students to attend Fred Douglass once renovations on that campus are complete, JISD will increase its elementary capacity by about 18 percent.

In other business, trustees approved:

• Forming the East Side Elementary Applied Learning Community program;

• The 2011-2012 school calendar;

• Elimination of the Vision 20/20 Technology program;

• Elimination of extended sick leave in the DEC(LOCAL) Policy;

• Participation with the Local Government Investment Cooperative (LOGIC) for investment of school bond monies;

• Adoption of TASB Local Policy Update 89;

• Calling an election for places 3 and 4 on the Board for May 14;

• A joint election agreement with the City of Jacksonville for the May 14 election; and

• A contract with Cherokee County to lease voting equipment for the May 14 election, both for election day and early voting.

The JISD Board of Trustees meets at 6:30 p.m. The third Monday of each month at the JISD Administration Building, 1547 Pine St. The meetings are open to the public.
