JACKSONVILLE —
As with the celebration of any 50th anniversary, a stroll down memory lane and reflections of yesteryear are always in order.
In the future, when folks think back to the 50th edition of the Tops In Texas PRCA Rodeo, which wound up a four-night engagement on Saturday evening, fascinating performances and near-perfect weather conditions will no doubt come to the forefront.
The early feedback from rodeo officials indicates 2012's rodeo was one of the best ever.
“I have nothing but great things to say about this year's rodeo,” Charles Dickerson, who has been one of Tops In Texas organizers for the past half century, said. “Our attendance was up significantly, with each night's performance drawing more fans than on the same night last year.
“The weather was great and I think that the cowboys and cowgirls, the stock, and the fans really appreciated having the rodeo in May instead of July. I got feedback (Monday) from Peggy (Renfro) at the Chamber of Commerce and everything was 100-percent positive.”
Dickerson attributes much of the rodeo's success to the support given by the people of Jacksonville and the surrounding areas.
“One thing that makes a great rodeo is great people and everyone in town was excited and was positive about the rodeo this year, and that made a big difference,” Dickerson said.
The only predicament that Dickerson said that he envisions the rodeo committee having in the future is actually a good problem.
“This year we had one of the top rodeos that we have ever had and while we couldn't have asked for things to be any better, we know that we will face a tremendous challenge in trying to plan for next year's rodeo to be even better,” Dickerson said.
Rough stock + tough cowboys = high scores
Two opening-night jewels — Tom McFarland's score of 84 in bareback riding, and in saddle bronc riding, Curtis Garton's 84-point ride turned out to be enough to give each cowboy a first-place finish for the weekend.
McFarland earned $1,003 for his ride aboard Classic Pro Rodeo's “Cimarron”, while Garton collared a $1,144 payday for riding “Kattle Call” for the required time.
The bull riding crown went to 23-year-old Cameron Bland.
The Mississippi cowboy was awarded a rodeo-best score of 91 for his trip on top of “Black Cat”.
Clayton Savage was a close second at 88, which netted him a $1,093 check.
Veteran Texas barrel racer, Shelley Morgan, who hails from Canton, had the fastest time (17.05), which netted her a $1,216 pay out.
In team roping, the duo of Colby Lovell/Kinney Harrell got the job in 5.2 seconds, which was the best time of the weekend.
Tyler McKnight of Wells and Justin Lovell came in second and picked up checks in the amount of $884.
Jacksonville's Troll Tettenhorst, and his partner Lightning Aguilera, tied for fourth place in the event.
Other Tops In Texas winners were, Shane Hanchey and Clint Nyegaard who tied for first (5.2 seconds) in tie-down roping and Monty Eakin who froze the timer at 3.8 to win steer wrestling.
