County commissioners lower speed limit on two area roads

JACKSONVILLE — In a measure designed to help bolster safety along county roads, the Cherokee County Commissioners Court on Tuesday unanimously approved the lowering of speed limits of two roads in Precinct 3.

Along County Road 1205, the speed has been set to 40 mile per hour, while a speed of 35 miles per hour has been set along County Road 2734.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Byron Underwood told the court that by establishing one set speed, it would better ensure safety.

“Some of the posted speeds (along CR 1205) are 40, 45, 35,” Underwood said. “We're doing a lot of this because of speeding (issues).”

After the meeting, Precinct 2 Commissioner Steven Norton said that along CR 1205, “there's been excess speeding,” while on CR 2734, a 12-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle traveling along the road last June. The incident occurred in the southern portion of the county, in Wells.

“We just don't want history repeat itself, and we need to do everything we can to slow (traffic) down out there. There was real concern from the family of that little boy, so the county wants to do whatever it can” to enforce safer speeds, Norton said.

“Normally, if there's no speed posted on a country road, it's 55 miles an hour, so in order for law enforcement to slow them down, we've got to post (speeds). Before they can write a ticket or anything, we've got to post a sign, even when common sense tells you, 'don't go around that corner going more than 30, because you may hit somebody or even kill yourself,' people still do it.”
