Cherokee County deals with evolving airport

RUSK —  Commissioners on Monday discussed the subject at length,  but ultimately decided against immediately authorizing the new taxiway and dirt work needed for hangars at Cherokee County Airport.

But in an interview held after the meeting, Cherokee County Judge Chris Davis said the hangars are a good sign that the airport is growing and evolving — growth that is really good for the county.

Additionally, county Commissioners have hired an engineer to come up with an expansion plan. The two hangars brought up Monday are in that plan.

New ideas and input on airport projects have been part of the background for some time.

“Over the years we have put together an effective airport,” Davis said.

The county-owned Cherokee County Airport is a public use airport located six miles southeast of Jacksonville's central business district.

Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the Federal Aviation Administration, the airport is assigned  JSO by the FAA.
