Cherokee County Sheriff: Mysterious gunshot nearly fatal in Rusk

RUSK —

At approximately 12:30pm today, Cherokee County Sheriff's Department
received a call from an employee at the Rusk State Hospital stating they had
a gunshot victim in the parking lot.
The employee stated that the victim, Garrett Scott Curtis (W/M 22 years
old from Alto), had gone to lunch and came back with a gunshot wound to his
shoulder or neck area.
Rusk Police Department initially responded and made contact with the
victim, who was only able to give limited information before EMS was on
scene and began treating him. The victim was flown to a Tyler hospital for
treatment where he remains in ICU in stable condition.
It is believed that the shooting did not occur on the grounds of the Rusk
State Hospital, but investigators have not been able to obtain any detailed
information from the victim on what may have happened, or where it happened.
An Investigator is waiting at the hospital to speak to the victim as soon as
he is able.
