Suspect leads police on foot chase

JACKSONVILLE — A 36-year-old Jacksonville man wanted on an out-of-town police warrant led local authorities on a foot chase Friday that began at an extended stay hotel and ended — with an apparent tackle — in a nearby creek bed.

Authorities involved in the chase reportedly became miserably wet and cold and had to warm themselves up after subduing Orenthal Jay Mallard, reports show.

JPD authorities remained busy Friday and were not immediately available to elaborate on the incident. More information about this arrest will be relayed as it becomes available.

Mallard remained in custody Friday,  held on a probation revocation warrant out of Jasper County and on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, failure to ID a fugitive from justice, and — possibly — assault on a police officer.

JPD officers continued to comb the hotel area for some time after Mallard was taken from the scene of the hotel where the incident began. It was not immediately clear what or who they were searching for.

Mallard has an extensive criminal history ranging from possession of marijuana to evading arrest to theft by check, records show.

According to reports, a hotel manager at the hotel in the 1400 block of East Rusk asked police officers Friday morning to remove Mallard from the premises in connection with an allegation of criminal trespass.

Mallard had paid money to stay at the hotel but it was refunded by management and he was asked to leave because he was suspected of committing “some kind of illegal activity,” according to reports.

When first approached by officers at the scene, Mallard apparently gave them an incorrect name and date of birth.

After officers verified Mallard was lying about that information and that there was a warrant issued in his name, the suspect is then alleged to have  taken off running.

Officers ultimately were forced to stop Mallard by tackling him in a confined area of the creek,  near the area's Jalapeno Tree and the Catfish King restaurants.
