Jacksonville College plans Homecoming weekend

JACKSONVILLE — A whirlwind of events are planned for the Jan. 18-19 Jacksonville College Homecoming weekend, with crowing of the 2013 homecoming queen and her court the highlight of the weekend.

The new queen will be named during halftime activities at the 4 p.m. Jaguar vs. Blinn College game at the Curtis Carroll Fieldhouse.

Alumni celebrating their 10-, 20-, 30-, 40-, 50- and 60-year graduation anniversaries will be guests of honor this weekend, with several different chapter luncheons planned on Saturday.

Events begin Friday with a 5 p.m. registration and social hour at the family center at First Baptist Church, 210 Phillip St.), followed by an introduction of members of the school's new golf and tennis programs at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, events will be held on the Jacksonville College campus, with a kick-off Purple and Gold Club Breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Little Cafeteria.

Tours of the historic Newburn/Rawlinson House, located at 406 Kickapoo and which houses the college alumni office, will be offered at 8:45 a.m., and the school's bookstore and gift shop will also be open.

The Jacksonville College Choir will perform at 10 a.m., followed by an alumni program and business meeting at 10:30 a.m.

Groups will dismiss at 11:30 a.m. for chapter luncheons: The Kellar-Laird-Carroll Chapter (alumni from 1935 to the mid-1960s) meet at the First Baptist Church family life center, while the Bonner-Gaylor Chapter (mid '60s to 1979) will meet at the Craft Baptist Church. The Anderson-Orr-Small Chapter (1980-1999) will meet at Lupe's Restaurant, and the Crank-Ross Chapter (2000-2012) will meet at Woodland Heights Baptist Church.

Basketball matches begin at 2 p.m., when the Lady Jags compete against Blinn College, and at 4 p.m., when the Jaguars meet the Blinn College men's squad.

Along with coronation of this year's homecoming queen, half-time activities include the rededication of the Peggy and Vernon Harton Basketball Court and recognition of the 1963 basketball team.

In conjunction with Saturday's homecoming events, the school is hosting a Jag Day, and inviting high school juniors and seniors to visit the campus.
