JACKSONVILLE —
An early morning blaze destroyed a home on Monday.
Mike Avis, a firefighter with Lake Palestine East Volunteer Fire Department, said the fire was called in just after 6:30 a.m. and was located on County Road 3501, near the intersection of County Road 3502 in Cuney.
He said when crews arrived the home was fully engulfed in flames and a total loss. The homeowners also lost a truck from radiating heat, which also heavily damaged a second truck.
Avis said the homeowners were taking their children to school at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.
The home was an older wood-fame home, and Avis said when they catch fire, they “burn like candles.”
“With the old wood, it was really hot and it burned really quickly,” he said.
Precinct 2 Constable and Cherokee County Fire Investigator Jack White said the fire appears to have started in the kichen.
“It appears to be an accidental fire in the kitchen around the countertop area,” he said.
Lake Palestine East, Earle’s Chapel Frankston and Jacksonville fire departments responded to the scene. Avis said the fire is contained, but the department will keep an eye on the site for hot spots and rekindles.
