BREAKING NEWS: Man who drowned in Lake Jacksonville identified

JACKSONVILLE — A local man who drowned in Lake Jacksonville early Wednesday morning has been identified as Marvin Freeney, 24, of Jacksonville, Jacksonville PD Detective Jeremy Pate confirmed.

Jacksonville police believe Freeney has been in the water for one to two days.

"At this time we have no evidence to believe foul play was involved," Pate said, although cause of death will be determined by autopsy in Tyler, where Freeney's body has been sent.

The body was found around 8:30  a.m. Wednesday under a privately owned pier at Bird Creek, a narrow cove on Lake Jacksonville. Although on private property, the pier was not attached to a home, said Cherokee County Game Warden Brian Bearden.

Police cannot determine an exact time of death, but believe Freeney's body floated to the location where it was found.

Family has been notified.
