JACKSONVILLE —
The cause of a weekend fire that destroyed a shop and a few vehicles inside is undetermined.
Ted Hunt, fire chief for Earle's Chapel Volunteer Fire Department, said crews were called around 12:30 p.m. Sunday to a blaze at 1391 County Road 3306.
Hunt said two old vehicles were destroyed and another partially damaged in the fire.
Firefighters worked alongside the Jacksonville Fire Department for around three hours to extinguish the flames, Hunt said.
Wind spread the flames to a portion of woods around the shop.
“Embers went into the woods and caught the woods on fire and we had to have the Forest Service come out and put a line on it,” Hunt said.
Michael Batton, district fire coordinator for the Texas Forest Service, said recent wind from the north is drying out the top layers of the soil, making it easier for fires to spark. He said southern wind usually comes with some Gulf moisture and less fire-causing potential.
