Cherokee Democratic chairman attends Obama inauguration

WASHINGTON —  Cherokee County Democratic Chairman Caesar Roy witnessed history take place Monday, as Barack Obama was sworn in to office for a second term as the nation's 44th president.

"I had a marvelous time," Roy said during a brief telephone interview following the inaugural event. "The weather was cool, but not very cold and it was good to see what a big deal the inauguration is to so many people. I missed the first inauguration but I believe I was as ecstatic as I was the first time he was elected."

Roy, who attended the inauguration with family members, said the enthusiasm he saw from the crowd was surprising but heartening.

"They were all so very enthusiastic – even though this was the second time,” Roy said. "I felt very good about it.”

Additionally, members of the Cherokee County Democratic Club gathered locally to celebration the inauguration locally at Phoenix Square, 201 E. Commerce in Jacksonville between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

During the president's 2,095-word inaugural address, he vowed to expand gay rights and tackle climate change, according to a press release issued Monday by the White House press office. Additionally, he defended the nation's safety net programs.

The president restated – on national television and before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of spectators – his belief that gay people should be allowed to marry. He also mentioned the gay rights Stonewall Riots of the 1960s in the same breath as the Selma civil rights marches.

"Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well," the president said.
