JACKSONVILLE —
An early morning accident on Tuesday left one man dead and another in the hospital.
The collision occurred on State Highway 204 about two miles from Loop 456 around 8:30 a.m.
Officials said a 1995 Nissan single cab truck driven Tyler Sherwood, 23, a possible Jacksonville resident with a McKinney address, was traveling north toward Jacksonville. Sherwood's vehicle crossed into the south bound lane, striking a 2012 Chrysler 200 driven by Wayne Davis, 27, of Flint.
Trooper Steven Crosby, with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the two apparently realized a collision was imminent and swerved to avoid a crash. Sherwood swerved to the left while Davis swerved to the right, causing them to go in the same direction and strike head-on.
“I guess both of them realized he was on the wrong side of the road at the same time,” Crosby said.
Crosby said because of the damage, he estimates the vehicles were traveling between 50 and 60 mph when they collided. A final crash report has not been filed as of press time.
Davis was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Brenda Dominy, and an autopsy has been ordered to determine cause of death.
Sherwood was taken to East Texas Medical Center – Jacksonville from the scene, before he was transported to Tyler. As of press time he was listed in fair condition.
Crosby said officials believe the collision was caused by distracted driving, but a full investigation is not complete. A toxicology test has been ordered for Sherwood, and charges will be filed depending on its results. He said toxicology is commonly ordered for accidents with a fatality.
Crosby said intoxicated manslaughter and criminal negligent homicide are potential charges which could be filed.
The Texas Department of Public Safety, Jacksonville Fire Department and EMS, Jacksonville Police Department, Gallatin Volunteer Fire Department and East Texas Medical Center EMS responded to the scene.
