JACKSONVILLE —
The city of Jacksonville has gone green and now provides a recycling bin at the Royal Oaks Landfill on Heath Lane.
Utility director Will Cole said the city applied for a grant from East Texas Council of Government over a year ago, which funded the purchase of the $7,200 recycling bin.
Only Jacksonville residents can take any recycling material they have to the landfill.
Jacksonville resident Mary Decker said she is a recycler and was happy the city now has an area she can take her recycled waste.
“Before this was here, I had to take my recyclables to Tyler,” she said. “It was hard because they were only opened certain days and certain hours. This is much more convenient.”
The city sent out a flier to residents in their water bill and it provides a list of what can and cannot be recycled.
Items that can be recycled are:
• Broken down cardboard boxes
• Newspapers, colored inserts and magazines
• Rinsed out aluminum cans
• Rinsed out tin and steel cans.
• All metal food cans
• Soda, milk jugs and water plastic bottles. All must be rinsed out.
Items that cannot be put inside the recycling bin:
• Glass
• Waxed or plastic coated boxes
• plastic grocery bags or sacks
• Food in cans
• Laundry bags
• Shelves
• Toys
• Buckets
• Motor oil containers
The recycling bin is available from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Allied Waste Public Services advised to not put any trash inside the recycling containers.
“We're going to be one of your best customers,” Decker told Mayor Kenneth Melvin.
