Houston police say suspect in slayings kills self

NEW SUMMERFIELD — Houston police say a man sought in the deaths of his wife and her friend has shot and killed himself following a brief standoff.

Police say 42-year-old Diego Martinez barricaded himself in an acquaintance's home Saturday. SWAT officers tried to talk him out, but he shot himself and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was the suspect in the Friday shooting deaths of his wife, 40-year-old Martha Nava De Martinez, and her friend, 31-year-old Omar Salazar. Police found Martha Martinez and Salazar in the driveway of the Martinez home. She was shot in the face and dead. Salazar was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Martinezes' three children, ages about 13 to 20, were home, but were not hurt.
