Students at Joe Wright Elementary School have the right tools to get down to the job of learning, thanks to local Suddenlink Communications customers.

The cable company’s local office collected supplies enough to completely outfit two students per grade at the elementary school, plus numerous extras to be used throughout the year.

“We collected tons of crayons, pencils, paper and glue,” Suddenlink staff member Patty Banda said.

The company itself provided 10 brand new backpacks for students.

Local Suddenlink employees wanted to make sure customers’ donations were headed to those who need them the most, before choosing the destination of their collected school supplies.

“We called the school administration and they told us the two schools that need the most help are Joe Wright and Fred Douglass,” Suddenlink staff member Dianna Starks said. “We just found Joe Wright’s number first.”

The cable company’s local office offered discounts on installation with the donation of school supplies over the last few weeks, during a supply drive they hope to make an annual event.

“This is really wonderful. We really appreciate all of this,” said, Joe Wright Principal Brad Stewart, who added the need is especially high at his school. “You open the door to any classroom we have and there are very few of our students who aren’t living in poverty.”

Suddenlink Marketing Manager Shelley Vaughn told school officials the local office is planning to hold a second supply drive in January.

“I’m told that’s when classes start running out of things,” Vaughn said. “So we want to do another drive to help replenish what’s running low.”
