Honoring Independence Day and troops fighting overseas, the cities of Rusk and Jacksonville held parades Fourth of July morning.
The Jacksonville Lake Association hosted a river floatilla with boats decorated in red, white and blue.
The floatilla is an annual event and lasted approximately 45 minutes.
Simultaneously, Rusk hosted a parade with an opening ceremony wit a color guard, prayer and patriotic music.
The parade was followed by the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the Heritage Center. Local Firefighters also fought for bragging rights in the fifth annual Gauge Lankford Memorial Firemen’s competition.

Spelling bee rallies community for Literacy Council
Nancy Lee, Candace Maddox and Janet Moore of Jacksonville Independent School District won the 19th annual Literacy Council of Jacksonville’s Corporate Spelling Bee Wednesday at the Norman Activity Center.
