Public library engages childrens’ minds, creativity

JACKSONVILLE — About 15 preschool-aged children sat as still as they could while a woman they affectionately call 'Ms. Jo' read them a tale about a puppies on Wednesday.

After one story, the children acted out the story “Dog's Colorful Day” by Emma Dodd by putting colored spots on a volunteer, and counting the number of spots on his body out loud.

Wendy Jenkins said she comes weekly with her 3-year-old son Cory Micheal and children she babysits. She said the weekly library story time, which is at 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday, is one of the highlights of their week.

“We can drive by the library and they will ask if it's library day,” she said. “And they love Ms. Jo as much as the library.”

Peggy Jo “Ms. Jo” Jones, children's library director for the Jacksonville Public Library, said she tries to pick a different theme for the weekly reading time. She picks several short books in the category to read, and sometimes has the children act them out on a small stage. Following story time, the children do a little craft that ties into the day's theme.

Several parents and children come every week and have become friends.

“They ask about their library friends,” Jenkins said. “It's sweet.”

Jones said there is always room for more.

“I don't care if they are 30 or 40 (years old), we welcome all ages,” she said.

But, she said, story time will potentially be moved in the last few weeks of October, because the reading room will be used for early voting. Jones said a location is still being worked out.
