RUSK —
Officials said emergency services will not be affected after the Cherokee County Commissioners court approved three changes to the official county map on Monday.
In mid-August, commissioners gave the Cherokee County Appraisal District the authority to correct issues where the official county map was right and the 911 map was incorrect. They also gave the appraisal district the authority to house the digital files of the official county map, which they said eventually will be the same as the 911 map.
Commissioners agreed any changes to the official county map should be done through the court to ensure there is a record through the minutes of what changes were made for records and for future commissioners. Once a change was agreed upon, it would go to Lee Flowers, chief appraiser for the district, to correct in the digital files.
At Monday's meeting, the court approved the first set of changes.
Commissioners unanimously voted to update the map to reflect the proper position of County Road 3162, which is in the county. Precinct 3 Commissioner Katherine Pinotti said the road is the tail end of Burleson Road in Jacksonville.
Jordan Yutzy, Geographic Informational Systems (GIS) Coordinator for the city of Jacksonville, said no one is in danger of losing emergency services from the change.
“It's always been outside (the city limits),” Yutzy said. “It goes to the county. They always addressed it (for 911 purposes) but for some reason it wasn't on their map.”
The court approved the tail end of Pineda Street to be labeled as County Road 3121. Yutzy said there are no homes on the small stretch of land that lies in the county.
“That road actually goes nowhere,” he said. “It dead ends into a city-owned lot. There are a couple of houses north of the road, but they use a private drive off a road further east to get to their property.
The court took County Road 3127, or Lake Park Lane, off its map because officials said it was inside the city limits of Jacksonville. Pinotti said the road has been in the city limits since 1993, and Yutzy said it was put into the GIS system in 2007, when the city began using the system. Between 25 and 30 residents live on the street.
“We just updated our 911 addressing to East Texas Council of Governments a month and a half ago,” Yutzy said. “All those addresses on Lake Park Lane were on there at that time, so they should see no problems with it.”
Yutsy said all of the addresses are correct on the 911 paperwork, but they found one resident who was using the county road number for their mailing address. He said a letter has been sent to the home to notify them of the change.
“If they have any problems they can always call public works and we can work to fix them,” he said.
The number to the department is 903-589-3510.
