United Fund looks to raise $117,500 for local charities

JACKSONVILLE — Fundraising began on Monday for many programs and services which serve the disadvantaged and youth of the county.

The United Fund of Cherokee County is working to raise $177,500 to help fund 18 local charities. The list includes programs for youth, battered women, the hungry, the poor and more.

“These programs count on us every year and we need to pull together and take care of our communities,” said United Fund President Patsy McLeod.

Fundraising efforts are broken down into three groups.

On Monday, volunteers met for the “major division,” which works to secure large donations of $100 or more from individuals and businesses.

The “employee division,” which works to secure smaller donations which can be taken out of a donor's paycheck, will meet today at noon at Mother Frances Hospital – Jacksonville.

The “Rusk division” will kick off next Monday at noon at Austin Bank in Rusk, and the “general division” will spark up on Tuesday at noon at East Texas Medical Center – Jacksonville.

Donors can choose to make a one-time donation or have a few dollars come directly out of their paycheck. They can also request the money go to a specific charity if desired.

“We can take $3 out of each pay period and you don't really miss it, but at the end of the year you have donated $72,” said Drive Chairwoman Nancy Washburn.

Donors can donate through any volunteer, at the Austin Bank Location on Commerce Street in Jacksonville, by mailing a check to the United Fund of Cherokee County, P.O. Box 111, Jacksonville Texas, 75766, or by calling Betty Ewalt at 903-586-5104 for more information.

All donations are tax-deductible.

“For a lot of these agencies, our gift is a major part of their budget,” Washburn said. “They depend on us.
