JACKSONVILLE —
Local grandparents reveled in the honor of their job title on Friday by visiting their little loved ones at school for National Grandparents Day.
Each campus set up different activities to commemorate the day, but all opened their doors to smiling guests.
East Side Elementary Assistant Principal Jodi Alderete said the campus anticipated up to 400 parents and grandparents comnig to the district for afternoon cookies and punch.
She said each class made presents for their grandparents before the small reception in the cafeteria.
First-grader Jahnnaé Hayes drew a picture of her family.
“I drew a rainbow,” she said. “We were all holding hands and having fun.”
“There was a pot of gold under there too,” her “Big Poppa,” Johnny Hayes, laughed.
The Hayes family came together to visit Jahnnaé and her second-grade brother Tykeston.
“Big Momma,” Dottie Hayes, said she thanks God everyday for her grand babies.
“When you become a grandmother, it is awesome,” the retired teacher and current minister said. “You think your heart cannot stretch anymore. I would have never thought they would be so precious but they are.”
The cafeteria was filled with children happy to see loved ones. Kindergardener Caden Foster gave his “Poppa Joe,” Joe Foster a big hug.
Foster said he lives in College Station, and drove the two-and-a-half hour journey on his birthday to see his grandson, and said “I wouldn't have had it any other way.”
Though he lives out of town, Foster said the two get to see each other often.
“We go to football games and all of that stuff,” he said. “We have season tickets to the Houston Texans and he has seen some Aggie games too.”
Sue Holloway said she comes every year to visit her now second-grade grandson John Johannsen.
“He's pretty special,” she said with a smile. “He sure makes my day.”
East Side was one of JISD's campus participating. West Side Elementary and Nichols Intermediate invited grandparents to have breakfast with them, Fred Douglass invited them to participate in its daily reading time daily reading time. Joe Wright is going to have breakfast next Friday from 7:15 to 7:45 a.m.
