NEW CHAPEL HILL —
Garrett Bonner struck out 10 Wildcats over five innings to help propel Jacksonville to a 4-2 win over Pollak Central Saturday night in the championship game of the Chapel Hill Tournament.
The tournament victory is thought to have been the Indian's first on the baseball diamond since the mid 90's.
Bonner gave up one run on run hit to earn the pitching victory.
Jacksonville tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth frame on a double steal that started when Cash Cleaver stole second, which sent the wheels in motion (literally) for Chris Holcomb to swipe home.
The Tribe then added three runs n the sixth.
Brett Eckles led the inning off with an infield single. Holcomb then dropped down a perfect bunt (hit) that move Eckles to second.
A Michael Sexton bunt advanced both runners up a base which set the stage for Zeke Edwards to squeeze home from third on another bunt.
Following a strike out by Cleaver, Guadalupe Muniz wrapped a pinch-hit double to right center, which scored both Holcomb and Edwards.
The Wildcats then tallied an unearned run off of Tribe reliever, Ruston Diers in the home half of the sixth.
Diers notched the save however, by working the final-two innings in which he gave gave up no hits while fanning three and walking one.
Jacksonville (4-2) will host Chapel Hill at 7 p.m. this evening.
