It rained almost all day, and it continued raining 3-pointers in the first half as New Summerfield eventually won a 54-45, match up at the John Mills Parker Gymnasium on Tuesday night in Class 1A bi-district action between New Summerfield and Tenaha.
A total of nine 3-pointers landed combined, while Tenaha’s, Ashlee Ray had four in the first half, and finished in the game with a team-high 20-points in the setback. New Summerfield got four, first half treys from Ramie Weaver and took a comfortable 31-24 Lady Hornet lead at halftime.
Maritzza Melendez led New Summerfield with 21-points, eight coming in the final quarter.
New Summerfield jumped out to a 10-3 lead early when Ramie Weaver sunk her first of four, opening half treys. New Summerfield held a 14-10 advantage after the opening stanza.
Ray began the Tenaha comeback hitting thee, 3-pointers in-a-row to draw the score to a 22-21, New Summerfield lead.
Weaver had added her other three-pointer and made a four-point play converting a free throw to up the New Summerfield lead to 29-22 at the 2:28 mark of the second stanza.
Tierra Henderson made a steal and added a basket for the Lady Tigers with 35-seconds left before intermission for the final points and a 31-24, Lady Hornets advantage at half.
Simone Derrett of New Summerfield scored five of her 15-points in the third period as the Lady Hornets held a 44-35 cushion with one quarter left to play.
The Lady Hornets sealed the game away with eight, free throws and a Melendez lay up to finish up the Lady Hornets scoring.
Ray fouled out with 1:24 left on the clock finishing with 20-points.
New Summerfield will advance to the area round to play Zavalla after a bye in the first round of playoff action. The site and time are still yet to be determined.
