Fight'n Indians can procure 16-4A title at home this week

JACKSONVILLE — One of the Jacksonville Indians' biggest goals could turn into a reality later this week.

The 30-0 Tribe have the luxury of playing both of this week's District 16-4A games in the oh-so friendly confines of the cozy JHS Gymnasium.

First up is a date tonight with the Nacogdoches Dragons, with Whitehouse scheduled to make its annual trip to town on Friday. — both of those game will tip-off around 7:30 p.m.

If the Indians can continue their run and win both of those outings, they will be the new District 16-4A champions, regardless of the outcome of the Feb. 12 regular-season finale at John Tyler.

“It's been one one of our goals from Day One,” Jacksonville head coach Brent Kelley said in regard to his team winning the district crown. “That has always been more important to us than where we are ranked or even how many games that we have won.

“To have the chance to do it at home this week in front of our home fans and in our own gym is a big opportunity for our kids, but we know that it want come easy because we are playing two fine teams in Nacogdoches and Whitehouse.”

The Dragons (13-12, 2-5 District 16-4A) are battling Corsicana for the fourth and final playoff spot, so expect Nacogdoches to come in ready to play and hungary.

The Indians polished off  'Doches 53-37 when the two got together in mid January in Nacogdoches.

Raybon Riden led the Tribe in scoring with 13 points that evening and Daytron Thompson canned 11.

Jacksonville outscored the Dragons 15-5 in the final quarter to cement the win.

NOTE: There is a bit of a scheduling quirk that district officials approved prior to the start of the season which allows Corsicana and Nacogdoches to play on Friday night instead of Tuesday, a school night, given the long distance that is between the two schools...That concession tweaked the order of playing opponents on the boys' schedules, which means Jacksonville will, in fact, be playing Whitehouse before it plays John Tyler...In the first round of district games the Tribe took on John Tyler first and then Whitehouse...An early glance to the District 15-4A standings reveals, most likely, the Indians' bi-district opponent will be either Mansfield Lake Ridge or Lancaster...Bi-district games will be played on Feb. 18 and 19 at mutually agreed upon neutral locations.
