Prep basketball now back in business

JACKSONVILLE — Basketball action will be heating up today and over the next few days as most of the area high school hoops teams will be returning to the hardwood after taking a short recess for Christmas.

The undefeated and 14th-ranked Jacksonville Indians (20-0) will get back to work by hosting Livingston at 2:15 p.m. Friday at the JHS Gymnasium.

A junior varsity game between the two schools will get things rolling at 1 p.m. The freshmen have the day off.

The Fight'n Maidens (10-9) will be looking to bounce back from a loss to Crockett that came on Friday, in the team's final pre-Christmas outing.

The Jacksonville girls will be playing in the Kaufman Tournament, which opens today and runs through Saturday.

At 2 p.m. on Friday Rusk hosts Hallsville, with freshman and junior varsity contests scheduled prior to the varsity tipoff.

The Rusk girls will hit the highway to Livingston for the Livingston Tournament, which starts on Friday.

Up the road at Bullard, the Panthers will be in Tyler for the Tyler Junior College Wagstaff Classic (today thru Saturday).

The Bullard boys will take on Lindale at 8 p.m. this evening.

The Lady Panthers will have a few extra days off before hosting Athens at 2:15 p.m. Monday.

While the New Summerfield boys are not schedule to resume play until next week, the Lady Hornets will be one of 12 teams that will be attempting to win the championship of the Overton Tournament which gets under way today.

The Lady Hornets (10-6) last played on Dec. 18 when they slipped past Tenaha, 53-50.

New Summerfield received a first round bye in the Overton tourney and will play either Beckville or Arp at 9 a.m. on Friday.

Brook Hill's Guard were slated to face Grace Community at noon today in the Wagstaff Classic.

The Brook Hill girls are playing in the Frankston Tournament, which opened today and lasts through Saturday.
