JACKSONVILLE —
Former Jacksonville Indian standout Cory Hamlett made one tackle in Sam Houston State University's 34-16 win over Montana State University in a Football Championship Series (FCS) quarterfinal game that was played on a 28-degree night in front of 16, 417 at Bobcat Stadium on Friday.
The Bearkats (10-3) will now travel to Cheyney, Wash. to take on Eastern Washington (11-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday, and a win in that game would propel the Bearkats into the FCS title game, which is scheduled for Jan. 5, 2013 in Frisco, for the second-straight year.
SHSU scored 17-unanswered points in the second quarter against Montana State to take a 20-3 lead at halftime of last week's quarterfinal matchup.
Eastern Washington, Montana State and Cal Poly all finished in a three-way tie for the Big Sky Conference title.
The Bearkats, who already have playoff wins over both Cal Poly and Montana State, will try for the Big Sky trifecta on Saturday as the Bearkats look to go 3-0 against teams from that conference.
Hamlett is a sophomore defensive back.
Rusk's John Trotter, a sophomore lineman, also saw duty in the win over Montana State.
