‘Jackets move up a notch in Class A weekly poll
ALTO — The Alto Yellowjackets (1-0), fresh off a 67-13 pasting of Groveton last week, have moved up one spot to the No. 9 position in this weeks state Class A football poll. The win was also the school’s 500th victory. Alto plays in front of the home fans for the first time in 2010 this Friday when they welcome San Augustine to town for a 7:30 p.m. kick off. The top-four places in the rankings remain unchanged form last week. Goldwaithe continues to hold down the top spot, followed by Canadian, Mart and Tenaha.
Bearcats, Lady ‘Cats win own XC meet
Both the Lon Morris College men’s and women’s cross country squads opened the 2010 season on positive notes by winning the respective divisions of their own meet which was held at the Norman Industrial Park on Saturday.
The LMC men logged a cumulative time of 1:22:34.2 to outdistance runner-up Texas Wesleyan University (1:26:25.5) and Ranger College (1:25:44.7).
Rodrigo Molina was the first Bearcat to cross the line — second overall. His time was 16:05.0. Jose Leos (16:26.0, 5th), Jason Hamilton (16:32.3, 10th), Laquadium Foreman (16:42.5, 17th) and Eddy Rojo 916:48.1, 25th) rounded things out for LMC
TWU’s Edwin Ngero came in first in a time of 15:53.03 in the men’s division.
The Lady Bearcats tallied a time of 1:07:08.2, followed by Texas Wesleyan at 1:11:32.4 and Ranger College who fielded fewer than the required five harriers.
Beatrice Kipraunto of LMC broke the tape first in the women’s division in a time of 13:03.04. Another Lady ‘Cat, Venessa Olivera, came in second in the race in a tie of 13:09.05.
Olivia McKinney (13;14.1, 7th), Julieta Esquvail (13:30,01, 12th) and Benadine Kosam (14:01.8, 18th) completed the top five finishers for LMC.
Hoffpauir delivers pinch hits in Cubs’ victory over Pirates
CHICAGO — Jacksonville product Micah Hoffpauir came in off the bench and delivered a pinch double on Monday night to help lead the Chicago Cubs to a 14-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cubs are now 56-76 on the year while the Pirates fall to 43-88. Hoffpauir is in his second stint with the Cubs this season.
JBSA to hold first meeting for 2011 season
The Jacksonville Baseball/Softball Association will hold its first meeting of the 2011 season at 6 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Woodmen of the World Building in Jacksonville. Officers for the following positions will be elected, president, treasurer, boy’s commissioner, boy’s player agent, girl’s commissioner, girl’s player agent, t-ball commissioner, t-ball agent and umpire commissioner.
Crimson Tide ace running back to miss season opener
TUSCALOOSA, Ala.. (AP) — Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram of Alabama will miss the season opener after injuring his left knee during practice. He was hurt Monday and coach Nick Saben said in a statement the star tailback had an arthroscopic procedure Tuesday. The coach says Ingram should make a full recovery in a “relatively short time.” The top-ranked Crimson Tide opens Saturday against San Jose State.

Paris Junior College took advantage of Lon Morris College's thin ranks — the Bearcats dressed just nine men out (due to injuries) for Wednesday's Region XIV game — by dispensing an 83-66 loss to the 'Cats at the Smith Events Center.

While not in any immediate danger of not making the Region XIV Championship Tournament early next month, both the Lon Morris College Bearcats and the Jacksonville College Jaguars, who are tied fifth in the South Zone, realize there is far more uncertainty as to their status then neither would feel comfortable with as conference play nears its halfway point this week.
