Jacksonville head volleyball coach Billie Walley requests that all freshman, junior varsity and varsity volleyball athletes to report to the JHS Gymnasium at 8 a.m. Monday for the first day of fall practice. Hospice Open

deadline extended
The deadline for registering to play in The Hospice of East Texas Adult Open & Junior Grand Prix tennis tournament has been extended until Monday. On-line registration has closed, however, anyone interested in participating in the event may still do so by calling either Frieda Melvin (903-721-1210) or David Hanna (903-571-6277) before midnight Monday. The tourney is scheduled for Aug. 7-8 in Jacksonville.
JHS product joins Gilmer High
coaching staff
GILMER — Joey Jackson will be working as an offensive line coach at Gilmer High School. Jackson is a 2005 graduate of Jacksonville High School and a former Indian football player. He has served as a volunteer assistant at Gilmer for the past three years while completing his academic work at the University of Texas Tyler. He is the son of Joe and Nancy Jackson of Jacksonville.
Shattuck finishes third in NTPGA Eagle’s Bluff tourney
Hunter Shattuck of Jacksonville claimed third place in the boys 14-15-year-old division of the NTPGA Junior Golf Tour stop at The Challenge at Eagle’s Bluff, held on July 22. Shattuck carded an 86, finishing 8 strokes back of the first place finisher, David Jackson of Longview. In boys 12-13-year-old action, Jacksonville’s Cameron Brown shot a 101 to take sixth place. Longview’s Parker Fiscus took first in the age group, shooting a 79. In other action at the tournament, Brandon Downs (Rusk) wound up T7, carding an 81, 8 shots back of the leader, Austin King (Tyler) in boys 16-18-year-old play. In the same age grouping, Bullard linksters, Harrison Dukes shot an 85, Blake Ridgeway (Bullard) finished at 87, Jeffrey Buchman carded a 90 and Ross Lee shot a 99.
Texas-Minnesota football series
canceled
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — University of Minnesota Athletics officials announced Wednesday that the Golden Gophers’ two-game football series with Texas has been canceled due to a contract impasse concerning video rights. The home-and-home series with Texas was scheduled to be played during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. It would have been the first meeting on the gridiron between the Gophers and Longhorns since 1936. “We are extremely disappointed that the series with Texas will not take place,” said Minnesota Director of Athletics Joel Maturi.
T. O.’s debut in Cincinnati delayed
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) — Terrell Owens is a late arrival. The Cincinnati Bengals’ latest addition missed his overnight flight and had to take a later one Thursday, delaying his debut during the first day of workouts at training camp. The Bengals had planned on him arriving early in the day, taking his physical and signing his contract while the rest of the team worked out in the morning. The news conference was rescheduled until after the evening practice.

The Jaguars from Jacksonville College outplayed host Navarro College for most of the night, but the Bulldogs came on strong in the final seven minutes and when the final horn had sounded at the Wolens Special Events Center, it was the 'Dogs that had secured the 71-68 victory.

Paris Junior College took advantage of Lon Morris College's thin ranks — the Bearcats dressed just nine men out (due to injuries) for Wednesday's Region XIV game — by dispensing an 83-66 loss to the 'Cats at the Smith Events Center.
