JACKSONVILLE —
A drive-through flu shot clinic sponsored by Cherokee County Public Health will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in front of the old May Drug Building at 510 E. Commerce, and is open to adults 18 and older.
This is the first year to do this, said Executive Director Chris Taylor.
“Convenience for the public was our motive. Many of our elderly and those who have limited time due to other commitments can get their flu shot quickly and safely this way,” he said.
Individuals filing with their Medicare or supplement insurance will be directed to one lane, where attendants will ask for a driver's license and a Medicare Part B or an insurance card. Those paying by check or cash will be directed into a second lane marked by cones, allowing for a smoother flow of traffic.
Cost is $20 per person, with no more than four individuals per vehicle.
“It is important for people to remember that the flu itself is not the only risk, but rather the additional symptoms that come with it that can cause worsening of other health conditions,” Taylor said. “Along with hand washing and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, the flu vaccine remains a very safe and effective means of reducing the risk of influenza.”
The first 50 customers will receive a discounted coffee card to Jacksonville Joe's, located at the corner of Jackson and Larissa Streets.
In the event of inclement weather – hard rain, Taylor said – the drive-through will be rescheduled.
No other drive-through flu shot clinics are planned at this time, but the department will reconsider if Thursday's event is a success, he said.
