New Summerfield boys take 20-A cross country championship; Wells’ Benton wins girls division

NEW SUMMERFIELD —  The New Summerfield Hornet cross country squad used a dominating performance to win the District 20-A championship for the varsity boys on Wednesday morning in New Summerfield.

Head coach Kent Willis' gang featured the top-three finishers as New Summerfield easily  punched its ticket into the regional meet, which takes place in Humble early next month.

Francisco Parra crossed the finish line first, covering the 3-mile distance in a time of 18:19.7

Freddy Hernandez (18:40.2) took second, followed by Jordan Alexander (18:47.7) in third.

The Hornets logged 38 points to finish ahead of Martinsville (52) and Neches, who garnered 57 points to come in third.

New Summerfield, Martinsville and Neches will now advance to the regional level.

Alto was a far-back fourth, tallying 120 points.

Celso Perez was the top finishing Yellowjacket competitor. He ran a 20:27.9 to come in 18th in the individual standings.

Wells came in seventh, with Colton Herman the first Wells runner to cross the line. He was clocked in 20:01.7, which put him 14th in the individual standings.

Other Hornet runners included, Rafael Garcia (12th, 19:48.2), Adrian Ornelas (20th, 20:37.4), Jose Mandoza ( 26th, 21:03.2) and Angel Marroquin (27th, 21:07.9).



   Varsity Girls

Sarah Benton of Wells blitzed the field in the varsity girls division, winning first by exactly 15 seconds.

She finished in a time of 13:34.6 to help the Lady Pirates to a third-place finish (and a trip to regionals) in the team standings.

Wells amassed 59 points and trailed only Shelbyville (36) and Cushing (46).

Chelsey Berry also did a nice job for the Lady Pirates, taking sixth place (14:20.4).

Other Wells runners were, Sabrina Crawford (11th, 14:49.6), Karli Butler (19th, 15:48.1), Savanah Fowler (22nd, 16:11.1), Destiny Henderson (23rd, 16:25.4) and Carrigan Glover who came in 25th (16:45.9).

New Summerfield was represented by Cindy Medellin who carved out a time of 15:48.9.

Marilyn Gonzales was the only Alto competitor. She wound up finishing in 17:53.2.
