RUSK —
Turns out the impact of Rusk's 3-0 win over then No.1-ranked (Class 3A) Henderson early last week had a far more reaching significance than just the one felt in Cherokee county and in Rusk county.
The Texas Girls Coaching Association made the Lady Eagles their brand new top ranked team Tuesday evening.
Rusk (6-2) opened the season taking on several highly regarded Class 5A and 4A schools in the Bryan-College Station Tournament, where the Lady Eagles ended up seventh in a field of 64.
In their last game on Friday, the Rusk softball nine got past a respectable Carthage team by a 4-2 count.
“I'm really proud of our girls,” Rusk head coach Ashley Renner said. “This is a honor for our team and for our school and I'm excited about being the coach of the No.1-ranked team.”
Renner added that she hopes her team will be to answer the physical and mental challenges that are brought on by sch a lofty vote of confidence.
“We have to make sure that we go out and the field and do our jobs and play like a top-ranked team,” Renner said. “With a No. 1-ranking always comes pressure and it will be important for each of our girls to be able to handle that pressure going forward.”
