Maidens no match for T. K. Gorman
TYLER — T. K. Gorman, a TAPPS member, proved their 15-3 record is no fluke as the Crusaders led from beginning to end Friday night at Haddad Gymnasium, eventually posing a 54-45 win over Jacksonville.
Despite playing a limited number of minutes in the second half, Kathryn Huber led the Crusaders with 16 points and Brie Smith pitched in eight.
Shunterial Session, recently promoted from the Maiden junior varsity squad, was the game’s top scorer with 17 points for Jacksonville while Amber Hawkins contributed 10.
Ashley Baker had six points and Tanika Lucas-Clay finished with five for the Maidens.
The Maidens are now 8-10 on the year.
Big second quarter leads Lady Panthers to victory
WHITEHOUSE — The Bullard Lady Panthers outscored Whitehouse 15-5 in the second quarter to break open a game that was 12-10 in favor of Bullard after one period as the Lady Panthers knocked off the Ladycats 47-33 in a non-district game that was played in Whitehouse Friday.
The second stanza proved to be the difference maker for the Lady Panthers (11-6) as each team scored 11 points in the third with Bullard adding nine to the Ladycats’ seven in the final frame.
Ashley Ricci and Minta Spears had a dozen points apiece to lead the Lady Panthers while Christina Hatten added nine and Kayla Welling eight.
All of Spears’ points came on three balls with Hatten adding a pair from downtown and Ricci canning one three.
Caroline Perrier of Whitehouse (8-6) led all point getters with 16 points, including four shots from beyond the arc.
The Lady Panthers nipped Whitehouse, 38-36, in the junior varsity affair.
Van wins a close
one over Bullard
BULLARD — Van’s Zach Ghormley scored 11 of his game-topping 22 points in the first quarter as the Vandals jumped out to a 42-28 lead at the break before holding off a frantic-late comeback effort from Bullard as the Vandals (11-3) escaped Panther Gymnasium with a 66-62 victory Friday evening.
Lance Anding sparked Bullard with 20 points, including four baskets from long range.
Daniel Howard chipped in 13, Josiah Rosebury 11, and Marquez Franklin 10 for the Panthers who now stand at 8-8.
Additional double-digit scorers for the Vandals were Jordan Schmidt with 20 and Forest McFarlin who added 10.
The Panthers return to action at 9 a.m. on Dec. 29 when they are scheduled to face T. K. Gorman in the first round of the TJC Wagstaff Classic’s small school division.

New Orleans native Kraus new JHS athletic trainer
Jacksonville High School student athletes needing medical treatment will have to get used to a couple of new faces from far away places when the new school term begins in early August.
Jason Kraus of New Orleans is the school’s new head athletic trainer while Averi Alderdyce, a graduate of Upper Iowa University, has assumed the duties of assistant athletic trainer — both are Licensed Athletic Trainers that came up through the Trinity Mother Francis Hospital athletic training program. -
Shattuck wins local NTPGA event
Local junior linksters found the comforts of The Challenge at The Woods to be to their liking on July 19.
Hunter Shattuck of Jacksonville won the boys 14-15-year-old division by firing a 8-over par 79.
Shattuck easily out distanced himself from the runner-up, Justin Largent of Rusk who tallied an 87. -
Rusk Express earn trip to TTA state tournament
As a result of winning the District 10 tournament, the Rusk Express have qualified for the Texas Teenage Baseball Association Senior Midget Boys (9-10-year-olds) State Tournament, which is being played at Coleman Park in Athens this week.

Fightin’ Indians get trio of new assistant football coaches
It will be several weeks before Jacksonville Indian football fans will be able to determine if this year’s team will be improved over teams of the past.
One facet that JHS athletic director and head football coach Steve Wells has already strengthened significantly is his staff of assistant football coaches.
Highlighting the influx of new blood is Rick Cullum who will be serving as the Tribe’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Cullum brings a proven track record with him to Jacksonville, having served as offensive coordinator on a state-championship Lufkin team. He also has been a head coach as well. -
30th Annual River Cities Triathlon set for Sunday
SHREVEPORT, La. — Over 1,200 triathletes are expected in Shreveport on Sunday as the 30th Annual Sportspectrum River Cities Triathlon is slated to take place.
