Area Hoops Roundup
Staff Report
SOUR LAKE — Josiah Rosebury’s 20 points sparked Bullard to an exciting 66-63 overtime victory over Sabine, the No. 4-ranked Class 2A team in the state, in the third-place game of the Hardin-Jefferson Basketball Marathon on Saturday.
The Panthers (9-5) moved ahead of the Cardinals, 37-26, at intermission, but Sabine (10-4) came back with a fury by outscoring Bullard 12-8 and 11-7 in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to send the game into the bonus segment.
Other players of impact for the Panthers were Lance Anding with 16, Daniel Howard who pitched in 15 and Brandon Beavers with 10.
Sabine’s Colton Kirk led all scorers with 33 points.
Bullard dropped a 76-62 decision to host Hardin-Jefferson late Friday to move into the third-place tilt.
In the Hardin-Jefferson game, Marquez Franklin contributed 15 points, Rosebury had 14 while Koby Greene tossed in 12. Greene and Rosebury each had two 3-pointers in the game.
The Panthers are at Hallsville (7:30 p.m. tipoff) tonight.
Rusk captures
consolation crown
in Brownsboro
BROWNSBORO — Rusk outscored All Saints 20-15 in the pivotal fourth quarter to down the Trojans 59-52 in the consolation final of the Great East Texas Shootout in Brownsboro on Saturday.
The game unfolded as a battle behind the arc as the Eagles drained seven treys in the game while the Trojans sank six rainmakers.
Mike Katon of Rusk led all scorers with 30 points.
Derrick Sanders added nine while John David Beard and Blake Fletcher each posted six points.
Katon canned three triples for the Eagles while Fletcher and Beard each put in two.
Bullard girls falter against Tyler teams in GETSO, finish fourth
BROWNSBORO — Basketball luck was nowhere to be found for the Bullard Lady Panthers on Saturday as the team suffered a 42-36 defeat to John Tyler and a 52-51 loss to Tyler Lee, in a game that was filled with controversy.
The Lady Lion defense did a number on Bullard, holding the normally high-powered Lady Panther offense to just three points in the first period and five in the third.
John Tyler led 21-15 at halftime and 31-20 after three segments.
Christina Hatten, of Bullard, was the game's top scorer with 18 points.
Tiaka Lee tossed in 13 for the Lady Lions.
In the Lady Panthers’ third-place game against Lee, the Lady Raiders claimed victory by getting a last-second 3-pointer from Tasia Washington to edge Bullard, 52-51.
With Bullard (9-6) leading 51-49 with four seconds showing on the clock, Washington took a pass at the top of the circle, turned and launched a hail mary that found its way into the cup. The clock started late on the play, raising concern as to whether the shot was actually unleashed prior to the buzzer sounding. After discussions, officials decided to allow the Lee basket and to put one tick back on the clock that allowed Bullard one final attempt at victory.
Unfortunately for the Lady Panthers, a Lee player made a steal on the inbound pass attempt, thus securing victory for the Lady Raiders (12-4).
Minta Spears led Bullard in scoring with 14 points, Ally Covalt netted 11 and Hatten added 10.
Bullard returns home tonight, hosting Lufkin at 7:30 p.m.
