BROWNSBORO — Jacksonville split their games in Brownsboro’s Great East Texas Shootout Friday, nipping fellow District 14-4A rival Lindale, 37-35, before losing the nightcap to the host Bearettes from Brownsboro by a 33-21 count.
After trailing 17-13 at the break, the Maidens (8-8) had more success on offense in the second half as Jacksonville outscored the Lady Eagles, 12-9, in each of the final two stanzas. Freshman guard Sametria Baker sparked the Maidens with nine points and Amber Hawkins pitched in eight.
Chancii Scott and Jessica Hunter had six points apiece for the Maidens, also.
Jacksonville got three-pointers from Sametria Baker, Ashley Baker and Tanica Lucas-Clay in the game.
Lindale was led in scoring by Dayre Marsh with eight.
In Jacksonville’s final game Friday, the Indian girls fell behind 24-7 at the halfway point as the potent Bearette defense held Jacksonville to just six points in the opening frame and only one point in the second. The Maidens bounced back to outpoint Brownsboro, 14-9, in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to make up the first-half deficit.
Lucas-Clay and Ashley Baker each poured in five points for the Maidens.
Hillary Shaffer and Y’Niqua Mosley scored seven points each for Brownsboro (12-4).
Jacksonville returns to Brownsboro Tuesday with the freshmen starting things off at 5 p.m. followed by the junior varsity.
The varsity game should begin around 7:30 p.m.
Bullard boys slug Crockett, 83-73; Franklin scores 23
SOUR LAKE — Bullard upped their slate to 8-5 with a 83-73 victory over Crockett on Friday in the Hardin-Jefferson Basketball Marathon.
The Panthers fell behind early, trailing 46-37 at halftime, but recovered nicely by outscoring the Bulldogs 46-27 in the final two periods to claim the win, their third in the tournament. Bullard previously knocked off Valley View (73-23) and Vidor (61-40) while falling short at the hands of Kountze, 85-81.
Five Panthers ended up in double figures in the Crockett game, with Marquez Franklin leading the way with 23 points.
Josiah Rosebury added 18, Daniel Howard canned 15 points while Brandon Beavers tossed in 13.
Lance Anding knocked in 10 for the Panthers as well.
Bullard was scheduled to have faced Hardin-Jefferson Saturday afternoon in the semi-finals of the Gold Bracket.
The Panthers will travel to Hallsville on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
Eagles advance to consolation final of GETSO with two wins Friday
BROWNSBORO — Rusk won a close game over Parish Episcopal, 54-46, before pounding Canton, 93-49, Friday to advance into the consolation final against Tyler All Saints on Saturday afternoon. In the first game, the Eagles (9-3) used a big second-half effort, outscoring Parish Episcopal, 31-21, to notch the victory. John David Beard led Rusk in scoring with 14 points, including three shots from long distance. Kalen Skinner added nine and Taj Cleaver accounted for eight for the Eagles.
Three Eagles finished in double-digits in the Canton game, with Mike Katon tossing in 23 points and DeMarrio Richards pumping in 20 — Skinner also added 15 in the game.
Rusk outscored Canton 47-13 over the final two segments to break open a contest that Rusk led by 10, 46-36, at the break.
The Eagles return home to face Gilmer, beginning with a freshman game at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The varsity tilt should tipoff around 7:30 p.m.
