To say Woden is a fourth quarter team may be the understatement of the year.
After scoring just 18 points in the first three quarters combined, the Class 2-A Lady Eagles exploded for 19 points in the final frame by shooting 64 percent (7-of-11) from the field to hand Jacksonville a heartbreaking upset at the JHS gymnasium Monday night. The final score was 34-32.
Woden basically gave the Maidens, who led by as many as a dozen points, 24-12, with four minutes to play in the third quarter, a bitter dose of their own medicine as the Lady Eagles used a relentless full-court press and a swarming pressure defense to force Jacksonville to commit 16 second-half turnovers — eight in each of the final two frames — which prevented the Maidens (2-3) from getting into a flow on offense — Jacksonville took just 12 shots (only five in the pivotal fourth period) from the field in the second half. The Maidens hit on just 33 percent of their field goal attempts in the final-two segments.
The Lady Eagles, who finished 25-9 a year ago, launched a 9-0 run beginning at the 5:28 mark of the fourth to pull within a deuce, 28-26, of the Maidens.
After the two teams exchanged free throws on subsequent trips down the floor, Woden tied the game at 29 when Destavia Davis cashed in on a layup off the fast break with 1:50 left in the contest.
Davis led the Lady Eagles with 12 points, eight of which came in the final quarter.
Brittany King’s short-range bucket off an offensive rebound put Jacksonville back in front at the 1:38 point with Woden quickly knotting the score once again when Davis added two points on a driving layup off the right side.
King fouled Davis near the basket during the play with Davis going to the line and draining the free throw, putting the Lady Eagles in the lead 32-31 with 1:24 left.
Jacksonville had a prime chance to tie things up on their subsequent possession when the Maiden guards worked the ball into the team’s leading scorer, Amber Hawkins, down low, but Hawkins’ shot was off the mark and Sarah McLemore was in position to shag the rebound for Woden.
After a Lady Eagle timeout, Woden’s Charlotte Singleton was intentionally fouled as the Lady Eagles were content in trying to run out the clock via the stall.
Singleton then calmly hit the front end of a one-and-one that extended Woden’s advantage to 33-31 with 22 ticks remaining.
On Jacksonville’s next possession, McLemore fouled King, sending the Maiden’s senior-forward to the stripe to shoot a one-and-one.
King produced nothing but net on the first shot, cutting the Woden lead to 33-32, but her second shot deflected off the iron and into the hands of Woden’s ShyAnne Stone.
The Lady Eagles’ final point (and the final point of the game) came on a free throw by Sarah Holliman that came with 15 seconds to play in the game.
Hawkins, who spent much of the night on the bench due to foul trouble — Hawkins picked up her third foul with 52 seconds to go in the first half and her fourth foul at the 2:34 mark of the third stanza — led Jacksonville in scoring with 14 points.
Jacksonville held a 20-10 advantage at intermission as the Maidens limited Woden to just a single bucket in the second quarter. Jacksonville outpointed Woden 7-2 in the frame.
The Maidens will look to return to the win column at 10 a.m. Friday when they face Bullard in the Burger King Classic to be played at the Tyler Lee varsity gymnasium.
NOTE: The Jacksonville junior varsity squad took Woden to the wood shed as the Maidens prevailed, 46-27.
