Madisonville hands Eagles first loss

Staff Report

RUSK — Despite four Eagles scoring in double figures, it wasn’t enough to secure the victory for Rusk, as Madisonville outperformed the Eagles in the closing moments of the game, and as a result handed the Eagles an 88-84 overtime defeat at Eagle Coliseum on Monday night.

The loss puts Rusk at 2-1 on the year. The Eagles were originally scheduled to travel to West Rusk on Dec. 1, but the Raiders have canceled that game. If Rusk is unable to find a replacement contest, the Eagles will return to action Dec. 3 in the three-day State Farm-Rusk Classic.

MIke Katon recorded his third double-double of the year Monday, scoring 27 points while pulling down 16 rebounds — he also had three assists and three steals.

J.D. Beard added 13 points, three boards and four assists for the Red and Black while Kalen Skinner and Taj Cleaver each pumped in 13 points as well.

Cleaver added six boards, three blocked shots, four steals and three assists to his effort.

Completing the scoring for the Eagles were Ray Harris (7), DeMarrio Richards (5), Blake Fletcher (3), Mike Pyle (2) and Brandon Downs (2).

“(Overall) I thought we played well, but we just didn’t finish down the stretch,” Rusk head coach Tracy Kincade said. “We will keep working (in practice) on those type situations and we will get better.”
