RUSK — Though their respective mascots (Eagle) are the same, the play of the Rusk and Tatum basketball teams are not the same as Rusk built a 54-15 halftime lead before cruising home with a 65-46 win over Tatum in a non-district affair played in Rusk Friday night.
Rusk, who led by as many as 32 points at one point, is now 2-0 on the year and will continue their homestand at 7:30 p.m. Monday when they host Madisonville.
Blake Fletcher sparked Rusk by scoring 19 points while hauling down four rebounds.
‘Blake (Fletcher) has really put the time in in the gym and it was nice to see it pay off for him (last) night,’ Rusk head coach Tracey Kincade said Saturday morning.
Mike Katon picked up his second double-double of the year, scoring 15 points to compliment a 17 board effort.
Other Rusk Eagles breaking into the scoring column include, DeMarrio Richards with nine points, Ray Harris (6), J.D. Beard (5), Taj Cleaver (4), Kalen Skinner (3), Brandon Downs (2) and Mike Pyle (2).
Cleaver also added four rebounds, six blocked shots and had five steals.
Rusk accumulated 42 rebounds (13 offensive) while prodding Tatum into committing 29 turnovers.
‘I thought we played well (but) things got a little sloppy in the second half, but that happens some with huge leads,’ Kincade said.
NOTE: Tatum defeated Rusk, 38-35, in the freshman game...Chasdon Bennett was the leading scorer for Rusk, hitting 15 points and Brandon Hamilton added five....Kody Stanley and Jason Hart each put in four points.
