Lady Panthers face Huntington in bi-district match

CROCKETT — State Class 3A bi-district playoff action gets under way at 6 p.m. tonight at the Crockett Middle School Gymnasium for the Bullard Lady Panthers (24-13), the second-place team out of District 17-3A, and Huntington’s Lady Red Devils who came in third behind Carthage and Diboll in District 18-3A.
Bullard is led by outside hitters Valerie Roberts and Nikki Coleman and setter Heather Camp.
Other key contributors for head coach Kala Morrow’s club include Ariel Hamby, Brittany Glover and Ariel Hamby.
The Lady Panthers, who finished second to Spring Hill in league play, won four of their first five district matches before losing three in-a-row down the stretch.
Bullard finished strong, however, by securing wins over Gladewater and Gilmer to conclude the regular season.
The winner of Tuesday’s match will advance to an Area Round contest against Brownsboro, the District 20-3A champion. That match will be played on either Thursday or Saturday at a site to be determined.

Bullard’s Minta Spears named all-state as a sophomore
BULLARD — The numbers don’t lie when it comes to evaluating Minta Spears’ basketball expertise.
One hundred and fifth young ladies, in Classes 1A-5A, were named to the Texas Girls Coaching Association’s 2009-10 All-State Basketball team on Tuesday with just 18 of those players being sophomores.
Bullard’s Spears is one of those 18 phenoms. -

District 14-4A coaches bestow high praise on Hamilton and Moreland
The District 14-4A coaches have recognized several Indians, along with Tribe head coach, Brent Kelley, with the recent announcement of the conference’s all-district squad.
Three of the five superlative honors went to the Indians.
Duke Hamilton, a senior point guard, had been choosen as the league’s Most Valuable Player.
“It is good, after winning a disrict championship, to be thought of so well by the other coaches in the district,” Hamilton said Tuesday morning. -

Dragon defense dismantles Jaguars in regional tourney
Paris Junior College, seeded No. 1, blew a close game wide open in the second half by preventing Jacksonville College from making a single shot from the field during a 14-minute span as the Dragons defeated the No. 9-seeded Jaguars by a final score of 70-52.

acksonville baseball team struggles in Henderson
HENDERSON — Jacksonville found the going tough at the Henderson Booster Club Tournament over the weekend as the Indians came up short to Nacogdoches (19-0), Carthage (11-0) and Marshall (19-1). Brody Finch and Brian Fuqua each went 1-for-2 against the Dragons. Ryan Davlin got the start on the hill and incurred the loss after giving up nine hits, four walks and a strike out. Cody Rodriquez and Brandon Orr finished up the pitching chores for the Indians. Rodriquez and Orr combined to allow five hits, nine walks while fanning one. Finch gave a good account at the dish against Carthage, going 2-for-2 (a single and a double) while Orr had a single as well. The Indians return to action tonight at 6 p.m. by hosting Marshall at Summers-Norman Field. - More Local Sports Headlines
