Over 30 youth take part in JC hoops camp

JACKSONVILLE — Over 30 boys and girls flocked to the Curtis Carroll Fieldhouse at Jacksonville College on Monday morning for the first day of the annual JC Basketball Camp.

This year's camp is being conducted by Jody Bailey, head men's basketball coach, Lynn Nabi, head women's basketball coach and Leasa Ailshie, associate head women's basketball coach.

Bailey said that the objective of the sessions, which run through Thursday, are to introduce the kids to the basics of the sport.

“Most of our emphasis is on the basics because I feel the fundamentals are critical in the learning stage,” Bailey said during a brief refreshment break. “Ball handling, dribbling, passing, shooting and one-on-one drills are what we have been spending a lot of time on.”

Bailey said that the youngsters did not seemed to be intimidated by the trio of college coaches that were leading them through the fast-paced drills.

“The kids here have had great attitudes and they are working hard and those are the key things,” Bailey said.

Adrian Lacey, an 11-year-old who will be attending Nichols Intermediate School in the fall said that there isn't much that doesn't suit his fancy when it comes to the JC Basketball Camp.

“The drills, the games...everything really, I love everything about this camp,” he said.

Despite a lot of competition this week, the JC camp still managed to attract a healthy number of participants, according to Nabi.

“I think that we have a good number for us, especially considering there is a basketball camp going on over at the high school and at Lon Morris,” he said. “We're excited about the kids that have showed up and Coach Bailey and Coach Leasa and I have been having a good time while teaching them some basketball.”
