TYLER —
Thirteen fourth-quarter free throws enabled the John Tyler Lady Lions to rally to defeat Jacksonville 43-37 in a District 16-4A game that was played at the Lions Den Tuesday night.
The Lady Lions (16-9, 1-1 District 16-4A) led 21-13 at halftime, but the Maidens (14-11, 1-1) came out smoking in the third quarter and outscored JT 15-5 to take a 28-26 advantage into the final segment.
The Maidens held on to the lead for the first five minutes of the period, but a subsequent three-plus minute offensive dry spell compromised the visitors' chances.
The Lady Lions lived on the charity line, shooting a whopping 30 freebies and making 21 of those tries.
By contrast, the Maidens were awarded just seven free throws — they sank five of those.
Jasmine Parson led the Maidens, who return home to host state-ranked Lindale (18-4, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Friday, with a game-high 19 points.
Inchantra Kendrick added eight, followed by Sametria Baker and Keevie Mathis with three apiece.
JT was the benefactor of 14-point nights by Tiaka Lee and Quaneshia Johnson.
