LINDALE —
Jacksonville did not fare well on the scoreboard in its season-opening match against Lindale on Friday night at Eagle Stadium, but head coach Kiff Wiemers said that the lessons he and his charges learned should only serve to make the team better.
At least that is the plan.
The Fight'n Maidens drew first blood when Rachel Stirneman booted a shot in from the wing on a free kick shortly before intermission, which gave the Maidens a 1-0 lead at the break.
But Lindale stormed back in the final segment and defeated Jacksonville by a 6-2 score.
“With a lot of new kids and kids playing in different spots, it was hard to tell a lot in practice,” Wiemers said. “Now that we have a game under our belts, we have seen what we need to focus on and what we need to do better.
“I'm encouraged by the fact that a lot of the things that I saw were fixable.”
The Maidens final goal came late in the game when Lindsey Green punched the ball in off a Jessica Alvarez assist.
The Maidens’ match against John Tyler, scheduled for last night in Tyler, was canceled due to the excessive rainfall that fell in the area Tuesday.
The Jacksonville girls will now trek to Lufkin for a 6 p.m. match on Friday night.
SUB-VARSITY: Jacksonville JV I fell 1-0 to the Lady Eagles, while Jacksonville JV II lost by a 2-0 count. Wiemers said this was the first competitive match for many of the members of both teams, as the rosters contain a large number of freshmen.
