NEW SUMMERFIELD —
The New Summerfield Lady Hornets will be hoping to get back to full strength and return to the win column when they welcome Alto to town (5 p.m., Friday) for the District 21-A-I opener.
The Lady Hornets (11-9) took it on the chin in the Overton Tournament last weekend when the team was without the services of two of its starters who were out of town due to family vacations associated with the holidays.
New Summerfield is led by three of its seniors, Maritzza Melendez, Simone Derrett, and Ramie Weaver.
Melendez averages slightly over 15 points a night, while Derrett knocks down just under 12 a game.
Weaver nets an additional 8.3 ppg. and is the team's chief scoring threat from three-point territory.
Cindy Medellin, another senior, leads the Lady Hornets in rebounding.
She has 144 caroms on the year and averages nine boards a night.
Derrett (6.4 rpg.) and Weaver (4.1 rpg.) get their share of boards as well.
Melendez paces new Summerfield in the assists category, accounting for four helpers a night.
She also leads the Lady Hornets in steals (64, 4.0 apg.).
New Summerfield, who has been ranked as high as No. 8 in the state this season, has wins over the following higher classification schools: Center, Gladewater, Troup, West Rusk and Arp.
