RUSK —
Crockett Bulldogs (0-1) at Rusk Eagles (1-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Eagle Stadium in Rusk
Coaches — Joe Kettler, Crockett; Ted Patton, Rusk.
Last Week — Lexington 41, Crockett 7; Rusk 47, Terrell 8.
Next Week — Crockett at Trinity Christian-Addison; Rusk at Eustace.
Game Notes: After going five years without a win on opening night, the Rusk Eagles changed all that last week on a night that was filled with heros wearing red and black...The Rusk offense rolled up 449 total yards against the Class 4A Tigers from Terrell, with senior Chaston Bennett gaining 232 of those yards while scoring four of the Eagles' TDs...Joshua Ruiz returned an interception for a 44-yard TD, highlighting Rusk's defensive effort...The Rusk defenders held Terrell in check until the Tigers managed a score late in the final segment...A young Crockett team — the Bulldogs have just 10 starters back — were no match for Class 2A's No. 4-ranked Lexington unit last week...Crockett is starting the year off with four-straight road games and Friday's battle against an old geographical rival maybe the 'Dogs' best chance at securing a non-district win, at least on paper...Look for an improved performance from the Bulldogs this week. Kettler is in his first year at Crockett, where he previously served as the school's offensive coordinator.
Bullard Panthers (1-0) at White Oak Roughnecks (1-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Roughneck Stadium in White Oak
Coaches — Shannon Wilson, Bullard; Tracy Blankinship, White Oak
Last Week — Bullard 58, Quitman 6; White Oak 10, Redwater 8
Next Week — Bullard at Diboll; White Oak at Longview Spring Hill
Game Notes: Averaging 8.4 yards per last week, Bullard's offense looked to be in mid-season form last week...Brentavian Henderson, one of eight Panthers to rush the ball, led his team with 48 yards in eight scampers...Colton Mebane went 13-of-15 for 225 yards (3 TDs, 0 INT), with Haden Bryant being his favorite target...Bryant caught six balls for 130 yards (21.7 yds. per catch) and 2 Tds...Sal Guiliano followed with three shags totaling 42 yards...Panther PK Weston Gray also enjoyed a bountiful evening by nailing 7-of-8 XP attempts and hitting a 42-yard field goal...He also averaged 40 yards per punt...Jess Wood led the Panther defense with seven tackles (four solo) and 2 INTs...Although the Roughnecks should be ready to deliver a big effort in their first home game of the year, Bullard appears to have too much experience and too many weapons for the 'Necks to handle in this one.
West Rusk Raiders (0-1) at Troup Tigers (1-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium in Troup
Coaches — John Frazier, West Rusk; Dennis Alexander, Troup
Last Week — Harleton 21, West Rusk 6; Troup 27, Quinlan-Ford 20
Next Week — West Rusk at Big Sandy; Quitman at Troup
Game Notes — Last week West Rusk lost to Troup head coach Dennis Alexander's former team; this week the Raiders from New London will have the honors of playing Alexander's current team...WR sputter offensively a week ago and will need to get the kinks ironed out to be able to avoid a double-digit loss to a bunch of Tigers that should be filled with adrenalin in their first home outing of the new season...Seth Gibson scored the go ahead TD on a 72-yard run last win to give Troup the win...He ended his night with 125 yards...Troup will be looking for a better effort from its defense this week as Quinlan-Ford out gained the Tigers 332 to 283 total yards...Troup PK Gabriel Leon went 3-of-4 on XP efforts last week.
Note: Brook Hill (1-0) is idle this week.
