JACKSONVILLE — Arkansas Baptist College rallied from a 14-point deficit late in the third period to hand Lon Morris College its first loss since 1940 as the Buffaloes pulled out a 28-27 win over the Bearcats Saturday afternoon at the Tomato Bowl. LMC (1-1) is fielding a football team for the first time in 70 years this fall and entered the contest fresh off a 49-0 win over Monterrey (Mexico) Tech last week in Jacksonville. The 'Cats appeared on their way to a victory after Brandon Whitaker (Rome, Ga) scored his third and final touchdown of the day on a 2-yard run that come with 3:58 to go in the third stanza and gave LMC a 27-12 advantage, following Cason Peterson's PAT. Whitaker was the game's leading rusher, carrying 31 times for 161 yards. he also dashed in on 7 and 3-yard scampers in the opening half. A 71-yard touchdown run by ABC's Antonio Smith at the 6:51 mark of the fourth proved to be the game winner for ABC (1-1) as the visitors moved in front 28-27 at that point. The Buffalo defense then forced LMC to go three and out on the ensueing possession, with ABC burning the final 4:34 off the clock on a long sustained drive carved out around eight rushing plays. Terry Newsome (New Diana) scored LMC's final touchdown on a run of 9 yards that came late in the second period and gave the Green and White a 20-13 lead at the break. Newsome carried the ball nine times for 34 yards. Thedford Rhodes had a big fumble recovery in the second half for the 'Cats while Buck McCullough, Aston Love, Jessie Sparks and Mark McGowan all made noteworthy plays on the defensive side. LMC now hits the road for their next-six games beginning at 6 p.m on Sept. 13 when they journey to Belton to face the Mary Hardin-Baylor JV squad.
