BULLARD —
Dallas Parish Episcopal had Brook Hill on the ropes Friday night but they could not deliver the proverbial knock out punch.
Guard quarterback Tyler Baker didn’t have problem in bringing on the kill shot however, as his 2-yard touchdown run — his third score of the evening — that came with just under four minutes to play proved to be the game winner as the Guard upped their worksheet to 2-0 with a 27-21 come-from-behind win over the Panthers (1-1).
Baker had a highlight-reel worthy evening, rushing 15 times for 136 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on a 96-yard kickoff return and passing for 94 yards while completing 11-of-21 passes (1 INT) to propel Brook Hill, who continues their season-opening homestand on Friday when they host undefeated Pittsburg (UIL, Class 3A) at 7:30.
Following a scoreless first quarter, J. B. Moss allowed the Guard to get on the board first when he juked in from 4 yards out at the 11:52 mark of the second stanza.
The Panthers took their first lead of the night with 4:40 to play in the half when Trey Vance scored on a 1-yard run.
Vance went on to score twice in the game.
Brook Hill led 12-7 at intermission as Baker’s kick off run back accounted for the Guard’s remaining points of the half.
The Panthers opened second half scoring by getting a 77-yard touchdown run from B. J. January with 7:45 to go in the third.
Following the extra point, Parish led 14-12.
January finished with 113 yards on 10 carries — Zack Shelley paced the parish ground attack with 126 yards on 22 totes.
The Panthers amassed 320 yards on the ground for the night which helped enable the visitors to outgain Brook Hill 331 total yards to 265.
Parish, one of the top teams in TAPPS Division II, threatened to hang a defeat on Brook Hill as the Panthers went ahead 21-12 following a 3-yard touchdown run by Trey Vance that came with 8:21 to go in the game.
That’s when Baker found another gear though, as Brook Hill scored 14 unanswered points in the final 8:21 to nail down the win.
Moss had six catches for 38 yards and ran the ball three times for 17 yards for the Guard.
Grady Dennis was the defensive hero for Brook Hill as he sacked the Panthers’ Collin Mondrick for an 8-yard loss forcing Parish into a fourth down and 20 situation late in the game. The Panthers were unable to get the first down on the final play of the series as the Parish quarterback surrendered an interception on the play.
