Tribe tennis squad humbles Hallsville in loop opener

JACKSONVILLE — Prior to the start of Tuesday’s District 14-4 opener between Jacksonville and Hallsville, Tribe head tennis coach David Hanna said he wasn’t sure if his squad was ready for the start of league play, given the fact the team had just three non-district matches prior — the Tribe went 1-2 in those competitions.

Indian and Maiden netters quickly signaled to everyone that they were indeed ready for conference play as team Jacksonville (2-2, 1-0) had little trouble in securing a 10-1 win over Hallsville (0-1 in district) at the JHS Tennis Complex.

The Bobcats’ lone point came in mixed doubles where Hallsville’s Lilly & Jones beat Ellie Day & Dylan Hubbard in straight sets.

In girls doubles, the Tribe’s No. 1 team of Melody Melvin & Niesha Nays ran their worksheet to 3-1 for the season by hammering Wiley & Eason (6-0, 6-0).

Also improving to 3-1, were Mercer Day and Kyle Crosby, who were competing in No. 1 and No. 2 boys singles, respectively.

Likewise, Morgan Weaver upped his slate to 3-1 by taking a three-set victory over Godsey (6-2, 4-6, 6-2).

Jacksonville will step out of conference play on Saturday when they travel to Van for a non-district match.

League play will resume at 3 p.m. Tuesday when the Tribe tennis team travels to John Tyler. John Tyler is 0-1 in league play having lost their opener, 10-5, to Marshall on Tuesday.
