CENTRAL HEIGHTS —

With the east of turning on tap water, the San Augustine Wolves released a fourth-quarter press that washed away any hope New Summerfield had of advancing into the Class A-I, Region II tournament later this week.
The Wolves (21-6), who are ranked No. 8 in the state, went on a 16-0 spree that lasted just three minutes and when the smoke had cleared the Wolves had turned what was a 51-46 Hornet edge into a 62-51 San Augustine advantage, in a Class A-I , Region III, quarterfinal that was played in front of an estimated crowd of 750 at Central Heights High School Tuesday night.
The Hornets, which end the year at 18-16, led from the midway point of the second quarter and all the way to the 4:50 mark in the fourth, when San Augustine took a 52-51 lead on a layup by Bobby Tanner, following a New Summerfield turnover.
But, a combination of the lethal San Augustine press and the fact that Hornet starter Ryan Weaver fouled out with just over five minutes to go in the game, was simply too much for the Hornets to overcome.
New Summerfield led by as many as seven points on two different occasions late in the third stanza.
Defensively, the Hornets held the Wolves to 31.4% (16-51) over the first three frames, but the final stanza was a different one as San Augustine got numerous lay-ups off turnovers that were generated by the press.
The Wolves shot 12-19 (63.2%) from the field in the final eight minutes of play.
San Augustine also limited New Summerfield to just 19-final half points, after New Summerfield owned a 38-35 lead at halftime.
San Augustine's Dez Randle was the games leading scorer with 18 points, followed by Tanner who popped in 16.
Austin Gray went off for 17 points to guide the Hornet attack while freshman center Cade Wilkerson drove in 11 points.
Weaver added nine, all of which came in the first half.
Tuesday's game marked the end of the Hornet careers for New Summerfield seniors Gray, Weaver, Cameron Williams, Adrian Ornelas and Jonathan Garcia.
