THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. —
According to published reports that came out Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys' tight end jason Witten suffered an injury to his spleen during Dallas' 3-0 win over the Oakland Raiders on Monday in the exhibition opener for both teams.
The severity of Witten's injury is not fully know at this time, although it is not believed that the spleen has been ruptured.
Witten could be sidelined for up to three weeks, even if surgery is not needed, thus jeopardizing his availability for Dallas's regular season opener on Sept. 5 versus the New York Giants.
Witten was injured after taking a hard hit from Oakland's Rolando McClain in the first quarter on Monday.
He then went to the sidelines for several plays, but later returned and caught a pass before the reserves took over.
With only a pair of healthy tight ends now on the roster, the Cowboys are reportedly in the market for a another tight end.
Witten, one of Tony Romo's favorite targets, had 409 catches for 4,824 yards and 21 touchdowns since Romo came aboard with the Cowboys in 2006.
He has 696 catches, third highest by a tight end in NFL history.
