MABANK — Good things came in small packages for the Mansfield Summit Lady Jaguars during their 45-31 Class 4-A, Region II, bi-district triumph over Jacksonville Monday night at the Mabank High School Gymnasium.

Summit's diminutive guards — Keanna Kelley (5-foot-6) and Nia Jackson (5-foot) — scored a combined 24 points by slicing their way through the paint to score most of their points on driving layups, while also dropping in timely three balls, which gave the defending Class 4A state champions a deadly demeanor.

Kelley eight of her game-high 15 points in the opening quarter as the Lady Jags quickly erased Jacksonville's lone lead of the contest (4-3, that came with 5:45 to go in the opening frame) to go 14-6 after the first eight minutes of action.

Summit then concentrated on its defense and held the Maidens scoreless for the first 7:22 of the second quarter as the Lady Jags, the runner-up out of District 15-4A, took a 20-8 lead into the dressing room at intermission.

Jacksonville played much better in the third stanza and even managed to pull to within 10, 25-15, after a bucket by Chancii Scott that came at the 3:31 mark of the third.

But, on Summit's next possession, Jackson lofted a three ball from near straight away that made its way through the cup to put the Lady Jags in front by 13.

With 2:09 left in the period, Stylz Sanders added a deuce from the lane and Jackson, who wound up with nine points, followed that up with another basket from down low, giving the Lady Jags a 32-15 lead with 67 seconds to go in period three.

The Maidens (18-16), who were representing District 16-4A as the third-place team, were toast at that point.

Maidens' head coach Tony Harris said before the tip-off that the key to the game for his bunch would be to keep Summit from scoring in the paint.

Summit got 22 of their points from the lane, while Jacksonville was held to just 12 points in the paint.

Scott and Jasmine Parsons finished with 11 points apiece for the Maidens — each young lady also came down with eight rebounds, respectively.

The Maidens also gave up a net of eight possessions to the talented Lady Jag outfit as Jacksonville turned the ball over 20 times to Summit's 12.

Jacksonville finished strong and outscored the Lady Jags 13-10 in the last period.

The Lady Jags (22-12) will now advance to play either Texarkana Texas High or Wylie in an Area game later this week.
